Patient 1
This patient was diagnosed in 2005 with a left breast cancer. Because she tested positive for the BRCA gene mutation she elected to undergo bilateral mastectomies and an oophorectomy (removal of her ovaries) at the same operation, and came to the Texas Center for Breast Reconstruction to have the reconstruction done at the same time as well. She had an immediate bilateral breast reconstruction. Because of the nature of her blood vessels, she actually had a DIEP flap on the right side and an SIEA flap on the left side. Three months later she had nipple-areolar reconstruction.
